US-Based Liberian Defender John Waller Returns Home After 16 Years | Afrinews247

Liberian footballer John Waller returns home after 16 years in the US. Read about his emotional arrival, plans to support local football, and community reactions.

Monrovia, Liberia – In a heartwarming homecoming just in time for the holidays, US-based Liberian footballer John Waller has returned to Liberia after spending over 16 years abroad. His arrival was met with excitement and celebration, particularly among local football enthusiasts and community members who remember his early promise on the pitch.

Waller, who left Liberia as a teenager in the early 2000s, has been living and playing football in the United States. Over the years, he built a reputation as a solid and disciplined defender in various amateur and semi-professional leagues across the East Coast. His return to Liberia marks the first time he has set foot on home soil since leaving as a young boy.

“It feels surreal,” Waller told Afrinews247 upon arrival at the Roberts International Airport. “To be back in Liberia after so many years is an emotional experience. I’ve always wanted to return not just to reconnect with my roots but also to contribute to the development of football in the country.”

Waller, who has remained active in soccer circles in the US, says he plans to spend several weeks in Liberia engaging with local clubs, academies, and youth initiatives. He believes there is untapped talent in the country and wants to play a role in nurturing it.

“My dream is to one day open a football academy here—something that gives young players access to coaching, mentorship, and opportunities abroad. I know what it’s like to come from humble beginnings, and I want to give back.”

During his stay, Waller is expected to visit several football programs in Monrovia and nearby counties. Local coaches and sports development officials have welcomed his return, citing it as an example of how diaspora athletes can play a vital role in reviving Liberia’s sports sector.

“He brings a wealth of experience and a new perspective,” said Coach Emmanuel Gaye of Monrovia Stars FC. “Young players will benefit just from interacting with him and hearing his journey.”

Waller’s visit comes at a time when Liberia is placing renewed focus on youth sports development as a tool for empowerment and nation-building. His story is one of hope, resilience, and the enduring connection between the diaspora and home.

As he reconnects with family, childhood friends, and his community, John Waller stands as a reminder that no matter how far one goes, the call of home is never too distant.
